چکیده

Many physical systems respond to slowly changing external force through avalanches spanning broad range of sizes. Some systems crackle even without apparent external force, such as bursts of neuronal activity or charge transfer avalanches in 2D molecular layers. Advanced development of theoretical models describing disorder-induced critical phenomena calls for experiments probing the dynamics upon tuneable disorder. Here we show that isomeric structural transitions in 2D organic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) exhibit critical dynamics with experimentally tuneable disorder. The system consists of field effect transistor coupled through SAM to illuminated semiconducting nanocrystals (NCs). Charges photoinduced in NCs are transferred through SAM to the transistor surface and modulate its conductivity. Avalanches of isomeric structural transitions are revealed by measuring the current noise I(t) of the transistor. Accumulated surface traps charges reduce dipole moments of the molecules, decrease their coupling, and thus decrease the critical disorder of the SAM enabling its tuning during experiments.

Control of Self-Organized Criticality through Adaptive Behavior of Nano-Structured Thin Film Coatings

In this paper, we will develop a strategy for controlling the self-organized critical process using the example of extreme tribological conditions caused by intensive build-up edge (BUE) formation that take place during machining of hard-to-cut austentic superduplex stainless steel SDSS UNS32750. From a tribological viewpoint, machining of this material involves intensive seizure and build-up e...

Non-Abelian self organized criticality model with one stochastic site in each avalanche shows multifractal scaling

A non-Abelian and stochastic self organized criticality model has been proposed in which each avalanche contains one stochastic site and all remaining sites in the avalanche are deterministic. Studies of avalanche structures, waves and size moments showed the shell-like avalanche structures, correlated waves within avalanches and complex size moments. We may assert that the model shows multifra...

Facile fabrication of super-hydrophobic nano-needle arrays via breath figures method

Super-hydrophobic surfaces which have been fabricated by various methods such as photolithography, chemical treatment, self-assembly, and imprinting have gained enormous attention in recent years. Especially 2D arrays of nano-needles have been shown to have super-hydrophobicity due to their sharp surface roughness. These arrays can be easily generated by removing the top portion of the honeycom...

Phase Transition and Critical Behavior in a Model of Organized Criticality

We study a model of “organized” criticality, where a single avalanche propagates through an a priori static (i.e., organized) sandpile configuration. The latter is chosen according to an i.i.d. distribution from a Borel probability measure ρ on [0, 1]. The avalanche dynamics is driven by a standard toppling rule, however, we simplify the geometry by placing the problem on a directed, rooted tre...

Thin 3D multiplication regions in plasmonically enhanced nanopillar avalanche detectors.

We demonstrate a nanopillar (NP) device structure for implementing plasmonically enhanced avalanche photodetector arrays with thin avalanche volumes (∼ 310 nm × 150 nm × 150 nm). A localized 3D electric field due to a core-shell PN junction in a NP acts as a multiplication region, while efficient light absorption takes place via surface plasmon polariton Bloch wave (SPP-BW) modes due to a self-...
